The Swaledale Cheese Company

The Swaledale Cheese Company has a rich history that dates back to the 11th century. The Cistercian monks are believed to have created the original recipe using ewe’s milk. These monks then passed on their cheese-making techniques to the local farmers of Swaledale, creating a legacy that would be carried forward through the ages.

Over the centuries, the traditional recipe was adapted to include different varieties of milk, such as cow and goat’s milk, while maintaining its unique character and flavor. However, the 20th century saw a decline in the art of cheese-making in Swaledale. By 1980, there was only one farm still producing cheese. When the Longstaff farm ceased operations, Mrs. Marjorie Longstaff entrusted the original Swaledale cheese-making process to the founders of Swaledale Cheese Company.

Since the company began producing cheese in 1987, they have remained true to this traditional process, ensuring that each cheese reflects the rich history and dedication of its origins. The Swaledale Cheese Company continues to honor and preserve this cherished craft, producing exceptional cheese that embodies centuries of artisanal expertise.
